About Paystack

Paystack’s mission is to power African ambition. Over 300K businesses across Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya use Paystack’s modern payments gateway, including Qatar Airways, MTN, Burger King, UPS, Africa World Airlines, AXA Mansard Insurance, FairMoney, PiggyVest, Crocs, Under Armour, Richemont Lifestyle Group, and many others.

Over the last 10 years, we’ve built products that have helped shape online payments in Africa, from automated recurring payments to direct bank payments and automated chargebacks. Today, Paystack is part of The Stack Group (TSG), a family of technology brands building modern infrastructure across payments, banking, consumer products, and emerging technologies.

At Paystack, we hire talented people, treat them with genuine respect, and give them the space, resources, and support to do the best work of their lives. We’d love your help.

About the Product Designer role

We're looking for a talented Product Designer to help build exceptional payment experiences for businesses and the people who pay them. Your work will directly impact millions of Africans as they engage with digital commerce.

You'll be embedded in a team alongside product managers and engineers, often as the only designer in the room, working across consumer-facing and merchant-facing surfaces. Your day-to-day will involve shaping product direction, conducting user research, designing flows and interfaces, contributing to our design system (Pax), and iterating based on real feedback.

One thing to be upfront about: our design team is in the middle of a deliberate shift from product design toward design engineering. We're moving toward a model where designers don't just design what we build, but increasingly build it in code, often with support from AI tools. Some of us are further along than others, and we're honest that it's a work in progress. We're not looking for someone who has already arrived. We're looking for a strong product designer who's excited to grow in this direction and help the team get there.

You'll report directly to the Product Design Lead. This is a full-time role, and the successful candidate will ideally be physically located in Lagos, Nigeria.

We’ll trust you to

Design across the product. You'll create user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs for payment experiences, balancing user needs, business goals, and technical constraints.

Own your work through to quality. You'll see your designs through implementation and own design QA. As you grow into building, this will increasingly mean fixing issues directly in code, rather than only flagging them.

Own a surface. You won't just take tickets on a product area — you'll be the design owner of one. You'll set the direction for it, decide what gets design investment and what doesn't, and be the person other teams come to about it.

Grow into building. You'll get comfortable taking ideas from concept to working prototype using AI tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or Lovable. The expectation isn't that you can do this on day one. — It's that you're genuinely up for learning it, and that you build the habit of understanding the code you ship.

Contribute to Pax. You'll help maintain and evolve our design system, ensuring consistency across Paystack products and helping make Pax a shared language for designers, engineers, and the AI tools we buildwith.

Research and validate. You'll run usability tests and merchant interviews, and use what you learn to make better product decisions. Significant product work involves direct user input, and that's not optional.

Frame product problems. You’ll work with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand customer problems, clarify requirements, define success, and turn ambiguous ideas into clear product directions.

Give and receive feedback. You'll take part in weekly design crits and learning sessions, sharing work early and helping the team sharpen its taste collectively.

Design for real product outcomes. You'll co-own the metrics for your area alongside your PM and engineers. Tracking whether the work moved them is your job too, and when it doesn't move, you're part of working out why.

Raise the bar around you. You'll mentor designers across the team, and the patterns and standards you set should outlast your involvement in any one project.

Think through the full experience. You’ll design not just the happy path, but also edge cases, empty states, errors, permissions, notifications, and other details that make products feel clear, reliable, and trustworthy.

You’ll thrive in this role if you

Design

You have 6+ years designing digital products, with a portfolio that demonstrates your process and outcomes, not just polished final screens.

You have strong visual design fundamentals: typography, colour, layout, and interaction.

You're highly proficient in Figma, and have good judgment about fidelity: when a sketch is enough and when something needs to feel real.

You have experience designing for financial services, payments, or e-commerce.

You care about accessibility, including colour contrast, legible hierarchy, and designing for the full range of people who use what we build.

You have experience conducting user research and applying what you learn to design decisions.

Appetite to build

You have a genuine appetite for code. You don’t need to be fluent, but you’re excited to learn, and ideally, you’ve already started reading or writing some HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

You’ve had some exposure to AI building tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Lovable, v0, or similar, even if only through personal experiments.

You’re interested in the craft of accessible implementation, including semantic HTML, keyboard navigation, and screen reader behavior, not just how things look.

Judgement and approach

You have strong taste, and can evaluate many options to identify the one that best serves the people using it

You’re genuinely curious about the business. You want to understand why something is being built, not just what to build

You think in systems, and design with an awareness of how one surface connects to another

You’re honest about your own work. You can explain your decisions, what you’re unsure about, and what you’d do differently

Bonus points if you

Have hands-on experience building and shipping interfaces in code, with or without AI tools

Are familiar with component-based UI frameworks, with React preferred

Have experience with interaction design, micro-interactions, and motion

Can prototype at high fidelity in Framer, code, or directly in an AI tool

Have contributed to a production design system

Bring a background in other disciplines, such as graphic design, web design, illustration, 3D, or motion

You've owned a product area end to end, not just projects within one — and you can say what you decided versus what the team decided

You've been on the hook for a metric, and you know what happened to it

Benefits

Competitive compensation package and benefits

13th month bonus

TSG Equity compensation

Full medical coverage

Wellbeing stipend

Generous leave and sabbatical policies

Hybrid working environment

Smart, kind colleagues who are invested in your growth.

Paystack is an equal opportunity employer and prohibits discrimination and harassment of any kind.
